I thought you might enjoy this poem by a friend of
mine, Joanna Lynham:
UNDERGROUND LOGIC
I put my ticket
in the automatic
machine
it stuck
a voice behind
me said
lady, lady you
are the wrong way
up
I turned the ticket
over
the turnstile
opened immediately
I thought
if only
life
were so
simple |
This term I’ve been attending a literature
course run by our excellent local Department for Continuing Education.
I’ve been reading books by Wilkie Collins, George Eliot and
Joseph Conrad. I find it useful to read slowly for a change and
then to discuss structure and narrative voice with a group of bright
and enthusiastic fellow-students.
I’m working on a new book: this is another Kate
Ivory crime novel, set in Oxford, of course, which should be published
in March 2004. I think I’ve now found the right title and
once it’s been approved by the team at Headline I’ll
let you into the secret.
Kate and I hope you all enjoy a very happy time
this Christmas, and send you our best wishes for a successful and
peaceful New Year.
