Oxford Shadows
This is the eighth in the Kate Ivory series.
This book took longer to write than others in
the series because much of it is set in 1944-45. I read a
lot of books and visited the Imperial War Museum to study
diaries and letters of the period.
Oxford, which was safe from Hitlers bombing
raids, was one of the areas designated to take in evacuees.
Children as young as five came to stay with strangers in Oxford.
Most of them found loving families to care for them, but some
did not.
Kate Ivory, now living with George Dolby in
his house in Headington, is searching for a plot for her latest
novel. She becomes interested in the children who once lived
in the house, but the tragic story she unravels involves Georges
family and threatens her developing relationship.
The Good Book Guide wrote: This
is Stallwoods best yet
the plot is elegant,
characters beautifully imagined and the mystery well sustained.
